Seif Wanly (Egypt, 1906-1979) Two landscapes and three figure studies
pen and ink and watercolour on paper, four signed lower right and one lower left, one inscribed Castella Mare, framed 25 x 16.5 cm.(5)
Seif Wanly, along with his brother Adham, studied with the Italian painter Ottorino Becchi, and later in their careers exhibited in Venice. At least two of the paintings in the present lot have a strongly Italian theme: the view of Castella Mare, and the masked figure from the commedia dell'arte, perhaps Arlecchino, which might suggest a Venetian subject.
Little of Wanly's work has appeared at auction and these charming studies have an unstudied air in contrast to his more overtly modernist paintings.
