Footnotes

  • Lady Donegall sat to Gainsborough in 1776 and the resulting portait now hangs in the Detroit Institute of Arts. The present portrait by Cotes would pre-date the Detroit painting by around 20 years and it is likely that when Gainsborough undertook the commission for the Detroit portrait in 1776, he was also asked to update the hairstyle of Cotes's portrait; it was not unknown for portraits to be brought in line with fashion in this way. In the event it seems he repainted the whole head.
