A Vince Welnick enormous collection of cassette tape recordings of Grateful Dead concerts, 1990s
Approximately 840 audio cassette tapes housed in two large plastic bins that contain audio of Grateful Dead concerts recorded live by Dan Healy, the band's sound engineer while the they were onstage. (John Cutler later replaced Healy and took over these recording duties.) Almost every single set played by The Grateful Dead between September 1990 and July 1995 is included, which encompasses the entire time Welnick was a member. After every concert, each band member would receive his own set of cassettes, clearly labeled with the venue, city, state, and date of the show. (In this case, further handwritten notations on cassette boxes read "Vince" or "VW," indicating that they were made and mixed specifically for Welnick. Only band members' cassette tapes were done this way.) An extra bonus in this private collection of Welnick's is a number of backstage satin passes included in many of the cassette cases, put there by the sound engineer who compiled the cassettes for the band. These are considered (by many) to be the pinnacle of Grateful Dead recordings as they come directly from a band member's personal collection of soundboard master tapes where the sound quality is excellent. According to Lori Welnick [Vince's widow], "these tapes were handed to Vince and the rest of the band each night as they were leaving the venue."
Standard tape cassette size: 3 x 4 x 1in
