A John Kahn almost all original 1958 Fender Precision Bass used extensively onstage with Jerry Garcia and in recording sessions, 1960s-1990s
The body ash with a sunburst finish; a gold-metal pickguard; the neck maple; the fretboard maple with nine black dot inlays; the headstock noting "Fender / Precision Bass;" serial number (on back of body) 026933; original finish; the three-tone burst indicating mid-1958 production as before then, bursts were two-tone and in 1959 they changed to a rosewood fretboard. Interestingly, a "1958" is one of the most highly prized vintage bass guitars for collectors. (Please note bass is heavily used with much of the body's finish worn off, cigarette burns on headstock, and scratches and dents throughout.) The guitar is housed in its black Fender case with a label on it reading "John Kahn" and included are three images showing Kahn playing this guitar: one of him with Jerry Garcia, one of him with Donna Jean Godchaux, and one of him with Maria Muldaur. Also included is a 'letter of provenance' from the former runner for the G.D. from 1980 to 1995, outlining how he obtained this piece.
