Lot Details
Two Rock Scully-owned Grateful Dead banners, 1980s
The first one blue and black satin featuring the cover artwork for the band's 1975 album with text reading "Grateful Dead / Blues for Allah;" the second one multi-colored satin (orange, red, yellow, purple, black) featuring the iconic 'Skull and Roses' image with text reading "Grateful Dead / Grateful Dead 1983." Interestingly, this is one of two identical banners; its mate can be seen hanging on a wall behind the band members on page 224 of The Grateful Dead Family Album by Jerilyn Lee Brandelius, Warner Books, New York, NY, 1989.

Footnotes

  • "My brother, Dicken Scully, received these banners from a company seeking to do business with our G.D. Merchandise Company. Dicken brought them in to the office, but all the band decided against them. We kept them around anyway and they ended up getting lots of play: we used them to enliven the otherwise bleak walls of the dressing rooms and backstage hallways while on tour and we also used them as backdrops for various press conferences. They were last displayed on the walls of the G.D. Merchandising office in San Rafael [CA] in the mid-1980s."
