Lot Details
A Rock Scully piece of concept art for The Grateful Dead album "Anthem of the Sun," 1968
An oversized color print affixed to poster board featuring the artwork that The Grateful Dead wanted to use for the jacket of their second album, this being the actual piece Scully took to show the executives at the Warner-Reprise record label. Also included is Scully's own copy of the finished album, but showing the purple background none of the band wanted (see footnote below for the backstory). (Please note that some areas of the print are coming unglued from the poster board, but the overall image is not affected.) Songs on album include: 1) That's It for the Other One, 2) New Potato Caboose, 3) Born Cross-Eyed, 4) Alligator, and 5) Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks).
20 x 20in

Footnotes

  • "This print is a color photo of the original Bob Thomas painting commissioned for the cover of our second album "Anthem of the Sun." I brought this to Warner Bros. thinking that we had covered all our bases when it came to "artistic control." This had been a hard-fought issue which I believed we had been guaranteed in our contract. Ed Thrasher, head of the Warner-Reprise Art Department, thought otherwise. I brought this piece to them to illustrate what we wanted on the cover, with the promise that the masters and photo-ready art would soon follow. At that time, the company was enjoying huge sales with Jimi Hendrix and "Purple Haze" and this fact may have influenced Ed Thrasher into changing our desired white background to purple. Needless to say, we were furious, but the damage was done and the album had been shipped. I don’t think Jerry or Phil ever forgave Warner-Reprise for this."
