Footnotes

  • Wallace spent nearly eight years, from 1854 to 1862, in the Malay archipelago during which time he visited every important island in the group. The Malay Archipelago records his exploits spent mostly in amassing "the astonishing harvest of 126,500 natural history specimens, including more than 200 new species of birds and well over 1000 new insects" (ODNB). It was during this period that Wallace's theories on evolution were formed, and the book is dedicated to Charles Darwin, whose Origin of Species was indebted to Wallace's researches.
