Lapis and Agate Cameo Music Box—Portrait of Tschaikowsky - Piano Concerto No. 1
By Manfred Wild
Idar-Oberstein, Germany

Imaginative and elegant, this unique music box exhibits the highest degree of lapidary craftsmanship. The rectangular box is fabricated of fine quality Afghani lapis lazuli beautifully matched at the seams. The lid is inset with a black and white carved oval agate cameo, (height 5 ¾ in), carved to depict the likeness of Tschaikowsky, renown Russian composer. Exquisite detail, realistic shading and subtle variations in the drapery of his clothing and hair texture reveal the talent of the cameo carver. The hinged lid opens to reveal an interior fitted with a layer of onyx and wood. Four circular lapis lazuli cabochon fittings secure a clear Lucite panel which covers the Swiss music box movement. The box is further decorated with a foliate motif thumbpiece and four gold decorations to the corners and is raised on four 18K yellow gold feet. At the front, a lapis cabochon thumbpiece operates the music box switch enabling it to play Tschaikowsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 in three movements. A unique offering certain to entice both the lapidary enthusiast and the music lover. Signed M. Wild, measuring 12 x 8 x 3 ¼ in.
