Footnotes

  • Kayyali produced a number of paintings of figures familiar from the streets of Syria's cities, such as newspaper sellers and shoeshine boys, and The Lottery Boy falls into this category, which displays a sad affection for these solitary people which sits alongside his overt political and social concerns, and which prevent the expression of those concerns from becoming too arid.
