one side stained red, the other side left natural, the Chinese versus the Mongols, the chessmen finely carved, kings as Emperors, queens as consorts, bishops as Mandarins, knights as horsemen, rooks as elephants bearing flags, pawns as foot soldiers with tufts of hair behind their pointed ears,
