A carved ivory netsuke figural chess set,
Japan, circa 1950,
one side stained brown, the other side left natural, kings and queens as emperor and empress, bishops as priests, knights as Samurai warriors, rooks as pagodas, pawns wearing hats and holding staffs, each chessmen with carver's signature on the underside of the base, in a wooden presentation box/board (2),
the king 6cm high, the pawn 4cm high, the board/box 39cm wide.
