Footnotes

  • The distinctive gilded border around the cavetto on this lot is identical to that found on the Swansea Biddulph Service and there are also strong similarities in the style of the landscape painting. Pieces from the Biddulph service are found marked 'J Bradley and Co' in red script. Examples from the service have been sold by Bonhams London on 13 December 2006, lots 391 and 392 and on 5 December 2007, lot 499. It appears that this lot was also painted at the Bradley workshop and is a rare example of this kind of decoration on Nantgarw. John Bradley took his premises at 54 Pall Mall in 1812, and they were renumbered to number 47 in 1821. As pieces from the Biddulph Service are found with both numbers, it would appear that this lot was painted around the time of the renumbering also. John Bradley took Philip Ballard as an apprentice in 1815. Roger Edmundsen attributes the Biddulph landscapes to him in his paper 'Billingsley, Randall and Rose', Welsh Ceramics in Context, Part I, p 203. He is likely also to have been the painter of this lot
