    Note : This picture is the finished panel of the larger "Away o'er the Sea- Hope's Whisper" (Kirkcaldy Art Gallery and Museum, described by Caw as a "masterpiece" p124). From McTaggart's most significant period, which encompassed themes of emigration and the arrival of Christianity in Scotland, this more general subject depicts a Kintyre family watching a boat sailing off on a calm, opalescent sea.
