Footnotes

  • A poignant piece featuring two prominent images from Rick's personal cosmology. The cow's skull is a Western-style symbol of death and the Indian mask image is used to represent transcendent consciousness. Rick created a symbolic language similar to the hieroglyphics of the ancient world to convey spiritual ideas, clothed stylistically in images evocative of the American Southwest and Indian tribal images. Rick was drawn to the spirituality of the American indigenous peoples and related imagery can be seen in works throughout his career.
Whereas this piece is related in theme and style to Rick's Monument Valley stencil series, it is one of several departures amongst paintings he produced from 1988-91. It seems he must have had fun with this particularly fertile technique and worked on many materials, including cardboard, wood, art paper and masonite. They are all based on the same images evoking the Wild West, to which Rick would then add his 'transcendent' elements, including flames and wings. Rick was continually exploring, through symbolism, the themes of life and death.
