Although production ceased in 1967, such is the enduring appeal of Jaguars classic Mk2 saloon that a healthy demand exists - not for mere replicas - but for re-engineered versions of the original. The car offered here is one such; being a corrosion-free example re-imported from California, USA and acquired by the current owner circa 1990, since when it has been treated to an ongoing programme of improvements and updating. Foremost of these modifications is the fitting of a 4.2-litre engine, which has been rebuilt by Swallow Engineering, of Basildon and increased in capacity to 4.5 litres courtesy of a Mike Hodge crankshaft. The engine breathes via triple Weber carburettors and delivers its power via a BMW Getrag five-speed dog leg manual gearbox. Other improvements include power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering (the car is now right-hand drive), Ford Cosworth front brake calipers, up-rated anti-roll bar, adjustable shock absorbers, stainless-steel exhaust system, Coombes louvred bonnet and rear wheelarch conversion, Le Mans fuel filler and replica D-Type alloy wheels. Re-sprayed two years ago and finished in British Racing Green, the car boasts a stunning XJ6 Vanden Plas wood-embellished interior upholstered in cream leather and complete with wood-rim steering wheel, while there is extra carpeting to the boot area. Since acquisition HCK 71C has covered a mere 5,000-or-so dry miles only and is presented in commensurately good condition throughout. An exceptional 1960s Jaguar capable of 21st Century levels of high performance motoring, this sensibly upgraded and highly desirable modern classic is offered with (tax exempt) road fund licence, MoT to November 2009 and Swansea V5 registration document.
