Footnotes

  • Nasr ad-Din Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Tusi, the scholar and theologian, was born in Tus in Khorasan in 1201, the pupil of ibn Yunis. He was recognised as one of Islamic culture's 'Great Wisdoms', for instance by the Great Khan Mongke, who sent for him during the course of his western conquests, though Mongke's general Hulagu took over his patronage and through Tusi's own connections a coterie of brilliant mathematicians and astronomers set up an observatory and library of more than 400,000 volumes at Maraghah, with books plundered from Syria, Khorasan and Mosul. Tusi died in Baghdad in 1274.
