Footnotes

  • The present landscape shows Wootton's indebtedness to Gaspar Dughet, an influence that was detected by his contemporary, George Vertue when he wrote that 'Mr. J. Wootton has distinguished himself in his late paintings of Landscape very much like the pictures of Gaspar Pousin both as to Invention, design and Colouring, he haveing studied several pieces of that masters painting has perfectly enterd into his Manner.' For a further discussion of Wootton's particular place in the tradition of English landscape, see lot 2.
