Carnival signed and dated 'Picasso 26.1.58' (lower centre) gouache on paper 65 x 50cm (25 9/16 x 19 11/16in).
Property from the Private collection of a friend of Picasso from the South of France
This work is also known as 'Le Roi Carnival'. It appears on page 187 of The Picasso Project. (The Fifties II, 1956-1959) Alan Wofsy, 2000.
The vendor mixed in the artistic set which Picasso frequented and the following three works were presented by Picasso to the vendor. The lot entitled 'Carnival' is particularly interesting as a powerful yet playful image. It was created in January 1958 when Picasso was working on studies for his famous UNESCO mural. The speed yet surety of the master's brush is captured in this image, while the bright colour palette suits the mood of the work.
'Plantes et Insecte' comes from a series of works depicting his fascination with insects made during the summer months in the south of France and is a vivacious piece, whilst l'assiette à Gateau is an intimate still life with a personal dedication from the artist.
