Footnotes

  • The first line of the catalogue footnote should read 'This old almond tree is next door to The Firs, Stern's former home and now the Irma Stern Museum, on the property called Wolmunster'.
    Illustrated:
    A.C. Bouman, Painters of South Africa (Cape Town, 1951), pg. 70;
    N. Dubow, Irma Stern (Cape Town and Johannesburg, 1974), fig. 28.

    This old almond tree is next door on the property called Wolmunsteris, and is still managing to produce blossoms today. There is an ancient stump of an almond tree in front of Stern's studio which, until a few years ago, still managed to produce a few blossoms. Due to the war there are a number of local Cape Town scenes painted by Stern in the 1940s largely because, at this time, she was unable to travel.

    We are grateful to Christopher Peter of the Irma Stern Museum for his assistance in the preparation of this catalogue entry.
