Swazi girl signed 'Irma Stern' and indistinctly dated (lower right) oil on canvas 93 x 69.5cm (36 5/8 x 27 3/8in).
There are many similarities, in style and subject, between this work and Swazi Youth, 1929, which is illustrated in M. Arnold, Irma Stern: a feast for the eye (Stellenbosch, 1995, pg. 68). Arnold comments:
"The style in which this work is painted, and the deliberateky posed attitude of the figure, position this image in the arena of art, not life. The composition is carefully and intentionally organised, with colour patches and curvilinear rhythms emphasizing the picture plane."
