Footnotes

  • The letter written by the Rt. Hon. Sir Edward Clarke, Q.C and contemporary photograph illustrated here express the views of Robert Wallace Martin: '...sent me by Mr Arthur Kray who said that he was told by the late Mr R.W Martin that they were caricatures of me (left), Mr Gladstone, E.C 7.11.1925'
The Martin Brothers also produced caricature birds of Disraeli and Lord Palmerston.

William Ewart Gladstone (29 December 1809 – 19 May 1898) born in Liverpool was a British Liberal Party statesman and Prime Minister (1868–74, 1880–85, 1886 and 1892–94).

Gladstone was known affectionately by his supporters as the "Grand Old Man" or "The People's William". He is still regarded as one of the greatest British prime ministers, with Winston Churchill and others citing Gladstone as their inspiration.
