Footnotes

  • A FINE COLLECTION OF MOSTLY REGENCY DESIGNS - MANY FOR THE REGENT HIMSELF - IN THE BURGEONING NEO-GOTHIC TASTE, including designs for the Regent's set of Scott's poems. The Regent was, as Byron informed their author, a devoted reader of Scott's poems, and in 1818 - the year after this set of the poems was designed - conferred upon Scott his baronetcy. On the Regent's accession to the throne in 1820, the artist responsible for these designs, Thomas Willement (1786-1871), was appointed Heraldic Artist to the King. From 1840 Willement was to work with that other proponent of Gothic design, A. W. N. Pugin.
