Autograph letter signed ("Dylan Thomas"), to his agent Nancy Pearn, agreeing to the broadcast of his poem 'In Memory of Ann Jones' on 26 February ("...As a matter of fact, I'm reading it myself, but my contract doesn't, of course, include that 2 guineas copyright which I look forward to receiving..."); annotated by the recipient ("They didn't tell us this!"), with the name of the poem underlined in red and recipient's name marked off, one page, 8vo, corner folded over, two paperclip stains and other minor marks, Majoda, New Quay, Cardiganshire, 19 February 1945

Footnotes

  • This poem, its title later altered to 'After the Funeral', commemorates Thomas's aunt at whose Carmarthenshire farm Fernhill he had spent his childhood holidays. It was first published in The Map of Love (1939), and is generally recognized as one of the finest poems in a collection otherwise marked by over-elaboration: "There were exceptions, notably the elegiac 'After the Funeral', a reworking of a notebook poem from 1933 that commemorated Ann Jones, the aunt at Fernhill" (Paul Ferris, ODNB). A recording of Thomas's own reading of the poem - to which he refers in this letter - is extant. The letter itself is not published in The Letters of Dylan Thomas, edited by Paul Ferris (1985).

Proceeds from the sale of this lot will go to The Trinity Hospice. See illustration on preceding page.
