Lot Details
YEATS (JACK B.)
Illustrated autograph letter signed ("Jack B Yeats"), to J.C. Miles, referring to the latest races and boxing matches he has attended and sending "a drawing which is supposed to represent Bungay Races and the Tipples rush", 3 pages, 8vo, original enclosure not present, some foxing, the Chestnuts, Chertsey, Surrey, 1 November 1896

Footnotes

  • The recipient, J.C. Miles, was a close friend of Yeats and lived at the Denes, Great Yarmouth. As this letter shows, Yeats had recently paid him a visit in Norfolk. Miles, in his turn, was to stay with Yeats in Devon, helping with the first of his New Year's plays for the local children in 1900 (see below). In the following decade, especially after Yeats's move to Ireland, they were to see less of each, although remaining friends and staying in touch at Christmas.

The present letter is illustrated with a small pen-and-ink sketch, in Yeats's early illustrative black-and-white manner, of a boxing scene in which a "Youth whose just had the worst of a go with the Small gloves" is addressed by a "Fat party".
