Footnotes

  • SCARCE. The Commonweal was the official journal of the Socialist League, and employed the talents of writers and illustrators such as William Morris, Walter Crane, Eleanor Marx and Edward Aveling. Essential to the understanding of nineteenth century British Socialism, the present set represents the period in which William Morris was the editor. Of great importance is the "Manifesto of the Socialist League" printed in the first issue.

Provenance: this set previously belonged to E.P. Thompson, and was used during the research for his work William Morris (1977). See illustration overleaf.
