Footnotes

  • WRITTEN BY LORD BYRON THE DAY BEFORE HE BECAME FAMOUS; it being on 10 March that Childe Harold was published, when Byron as he put it "awoke one morning and found myself famous". This free front was written for his friend and future biographer, the poet Thomas Moore, and addressed to Moore's mother at her house at Kilmainham, then just outside Dublin. Byron, as a member of the House of Lords, not only had the privilege of sending ten free letters a day, so long as he franked them with signature, place and date, but of receiving free post as well. In a letter to his mother soon after, Moore refers to the use he is making of Byron's franking privileges: "I hope now however, since I have told you of the convenience of inclosing to Lord Byron, that you will let me hear a little oftener about you" (Memoirs, Journal and Correspondence of Thomas Moore, edited by Lord John Russell, 1853, i, no.168, reprinted by Dowden). No letter by Byron himself of this date is known.
