Custom calf-backed solander box. Light waterstain to map and #2 gatherings, short tear to map at fold, tears to table and one page, all without loss, covers rubbed, chips to head and foot of spine.

First published edition of Notes on the State of Virginia, the work having first been privately printed in an edition of 200 copies. This edition is also the first to carry a map, produced at the suggestion of Jefferson's translator the Abbé Morallet. Howes J78; Sabin 35895.
