SPENSER, EDMUND. 1552?-1599.
The Faerie Queen: The Shepheards Calendar: Together with the Other Works of England's Arch-Poet. London: H.L. for Mathew Lownes, 1611-09. [2 ll], A4, B-Y6, Aa-Hh6, Ii4; A-E6, F4; A-L6, M2, *8; A8. Woodcut title, vignettes, head- and tailpieces, printer's devices, and initials. Folio (279 x 185 mm). Period full mottled brown calf, rebacked, covers with double gilt rule panel centered with gilt lion and cannon device, gilt-lettered spine. Some brief faint stains, infrequent spots, but generally very clean, "Mother Hubbards Tale" with some wear to edges, joints cracked, covers with general wear, corners reinforced, an excellent copy overall.
First collected edition, made from the sheets of the 1609 edition of The Faerie Queen, but with new title and dedication, and additional works printed in 1611. Extremely rare in this condition. "Mother Hubbards Tale" was likely inserted at the time of rebacking as it differs in condition from the other matter and wasn't included the collected edition until 1612/13. Pforzheimer 972.
Provenance: Bookplate of Bruce of Whorleton, dated 1712.
