A Luba stool
Democratic Republic of Congo, in the form of a standing caryatid holding the sides of the seat with each hand; the stool top sitting in the head. Simple facial features and pointed breasts, raised scarification to the abdomen and simple stocky legs. Dark blackened surface.

  • Provenance:
    Collected prior to World War I by Max Wieczorek (1863-1955). Wieczorek studied art in Germany and Italy with Ferdinand Keller and Max Thedy, emigrating to America in 1893. Sometime between the first and second Boer Wars and World War I, Wieczorek made several hunting trips to then German East Africa and Belgian Congo. He later worked as a stained glass designer for Louis C. Tiffany until 1908. After the death of his wife, he fatally shot himself at his home in Pasadena on Sept. 25, 1955.
