Luba figural pendants are made in elephant and hippo ivory, bone, and horn. Though they may represent known personages, in their function as amulets, they reference the forces of the powerful female in Luba religious thought. As such, they allude to the original matrilineal ancestry of the Luba, later supplanted by patrilineal descent. Indeed, nearly the entire corpus of Luba art depicts the female in a position of primacy, protection, and power. The amuletic use of such images then would be a potent reminder of Luba foundation myths and fundamental “essential” power.
