Footnotes

  • Provenance:
By descent through an Ohio family, with ties to missionaries in Hawaii in the 1890’s.

This particular quilt is extremely rare, and probably dates from the King Kalakaua period (1882-1891). It almost certainly predates the end of the monarchy in 1893. Such quilts are often referred to as "wedding quilts" as they were sometimes made to commemorate royal or noble marriages. Unfortunately, the initials represented on the quilt at present have not been matched to known historical figures.
