A standing male figure
Papua New Guinea, East Sepik Province, the pointed oval face with undulating hairline, straight brow ridges and long triangular nose, above breast incised with curvilinear decoration, arm free to the side, cylindrical abdomen with carved navel and surrounding lozenge ornament, large phallus and narrow bowed legs, all over weathered patina (one arm and both feet deficient, stabilized insect depredation).
height 30in

  • Provenance:
    Joseph G. Gerena, New York

This powerful figure, almost certainly of 19th century origin displays a brooding intensity. The overall composition makes this figure dynamic rather than static.
