As the painter laureate of the car, his paintings hang in the homes, garages and carriage houses of noted car collectors and celebrities.
Harold Cleworth, is one of the most respected and well-known automotive artists in the world. Born in the industrial North of England at the outset of WWII, today he lives in Venice Beach, California.
As a graduate of the prestigious Manchester College of Art, Cleworth moved to San Francisco in 1972. He began a career as a fine artist, with the automobile his subject of choice. Suddenly private collectors around the world were calling Cleworth with commissions to paint exacting portraits of their classic Duesenbergs, Ferraris, Packards and Bugattis.
Cleworths original artwork was the basis for posters that were produced for the Los Angeles and Chicago Auto Shows. In the 1980s he immortalized F1 World Champion Niki Laudas McLaren wrapped in the cellophane of its cigarette sponsors packaging.
Harold Cleworths paintings take between one and three months to complete and the artist produces no more than six or seven pieces annually. His originals command extraordinary prices and rarely come onto the market.
