In this devastating photograph of Dean, Linda and Crissy Damm in a shared bed, daughter Crissy looks up trapped in resignation. Surrounding her is a plastic statue of the Virgin Mary, a hash pipe and her sleeping step-father's arm. On assignment for Life Magazine, Mary Ellen Mark began photographing the Damm family in 1987 when they were homeless and living out of their car. Seven years later in 1994, contacted by the family, Mary Ellen Mark photographed the family again, when they were squatting on an abandoned pig farm north of Los Angeles. This photograph is from the 1994 continuation of the Damm family series.
