LINCOLN, ABRAHAM. 1809-1865.
LINCOLN SIGNS PARDON FOR ARSONIST.
Manuscript Document Signed (Abraham Lincoln), 3 pp recto and verso, folio (conjoining leaves), Washington, October 12, 1861, being a pardon for Robert Pinnix, also signed by William H. Seward as Secretary of State, with red wax-white wafer seal, leaves creased horizontally and vertically, mildly toned, minor browning to edges, reinforcements at hinge and folds.
Lincoln signs this unusual manuscript pardon for a man convicted on three indictments for arson, citing as reasons his exemplary behavior in prison, his youth at the time of the crimes, and his mothers need of his assistance to support the family.
