ROSSI, GIOVANNI GHERARDO DE.
Scherzi poetici e pittorici. Parma: Bodoni, 1795. pp. Illustrated with engraved title and 40 plates by Francesco Rosaspina after José Teixeira Barreto, each extremely finely overpainted in gouache. Period full red straight-grained morocco by Charles Hering, the covers with broad gilt borders surrounding central panel with elaborate cornerpieces of vine and lyre motifs on a ground of gilt dots, the spine gilt in six compartments, watered silk doublures and endpapers, inner gilt dentelles of a similarly elaborate style, a.e.g. The text leaves foxed at edges, the plates generally unaffected, dedication and one other leaf with crowned S inkstamp, extremities of binding rubbed.
Possibly the dedicatee's copy, with the plates extremely finely hand-colored, and with what may be his ownership stamp. The work is normally found with the plates printed in outline in brown and with the borders printed in black. Charles Hering was apparently inspired by the borders of this Bodoni publication, and had tools cut based on a number of the ornaments.
