Footnotes

  • Francois Linke (1855-1946) is without exception the most important French cabinetmaker of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Austria, he emigrated to France in 1875 and began studying design. By the year 1900 he was employing 90 craftsmen in his atelier at 170, faubourg Saint-Antoine. His work is a triumph of rococo design and workmanship, both the superb marquetry and gilt bronze mounts.
