A large silver-wire-inlaid bronze tripod censer
18th/19th century
The bombé censer with a pair of elephant handles suspending loose rings, surmounted by a short neck and galleried rim, supported on three tapering legs, decorated with dragons pursuing the flaming pearl amidst cloud scrolls above waves, the shoulders and neck with cloud scrolls, the rim with a key-fret border, the base inlaid with a Xuande shi sou mark, later wood cover (losses and damage to elephant ears).

  • Large silver wire inlaid bronzes with the mark Shi sou ('old man Shi') are rare, as most are smaller scholar artifacts. For scholar objects, see R. Kerr,Later Chinese Bronzes, London, 1990, p.65, pls.49 and 50. A smaller silver-wire-inlaid bronze tripod censer, bearing the mark Shi sou, was sold at Sotheby's New York, 20 March 2007, lot 569. Compare also with a silver-wire-inlaid gu vase bearing the Shi sou mark and decorated with dragons, illustrated in The Second Bronze Age. Later Chinese Metalwork, Sydney L.
