A 17th Century French white marble plaque of the rape of Lucretia
School of Fontainebleu,

Footnotes

  • The School of Fontainebleu was the most inspirational expression of the ambition harboured by Francis I to emulate the great humanist princes of Italy and to glorify the prestige of the French crown by bringing about a national revival of the arts under the aegis of lavish court patronage. Francis I brought Italian artists to lead the work which was carried out at Fontainebleu between 1528 and 1558, amongst them the Mannerist Giovanni Battista Rosso and Primaticcio. Italian masters adapted their styles to the courtly ideals of French taste and were assisted by French and Flemish artists. A distinctive style of Mannerism was born from this mixture of influences; a combination of sensuality and decorative flair, of voluptousness and elegance, all embodied in the above plaque
