Footnotes

  • Provenance: Possibly from Ashford Castle, Co. Galway.

The above lot shares certain similarties with a chair from the estate of the late Caroline, Lady Hobart, formerly the Duchess of Leeds which was sold at Bonhams, London, 27 June 2006, lot 83. Both have the paper-scroll top-rail with carved acanthus, the splat supporting pierced roundels and the line scroll arm terminals. The paper-scroll top-rail and line scroll both appear on a chair with a similar pierced splat thought to have been supplied to William Ponsonby, second Earl of Bessborough (1704-1793) and later sold at Sotheby's, Stanstead Park, 5 october 1999, lot 12. The shell carved knee with husk below was a popular device for the cabriole leg on Irish seat furniture of the mid 18th century and this combined with its Irish provenance may suggest an Irish origin.
