Footnotes

  • It is likely that two sets of chocolate cups were made at Worcester in this pattern, one with solid scroll handles and the other using the rare pierced handle forms which seem to have been reserved for the most costly sets. A single tea service was made with related Chinoiserie Musicians decoration, see Bonhams' catalogue of the Butti collection, 10 May 2006, lot 75. The gilding on the teaset links it to a Worcester armorial service of Queen's pattern with the reserved coat of arms of Frye, probably made for the marriage of Roland Frye to Bliss Leigh Spencer in 1768, confirming the likely date of manufacture for the present lot. A chocolate cup and saucer with similar pierced handles is illustrated by H Rissik Marshall, Coloured Worcester Porcelain, pl. 14, fig. 247. An example with the solid handles is illustrated by John Sandon, Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain, p. 113. Another is in the Untermyer collection, catalogue fig. 298.
