A large Canosan polychrome lidded pottery pyxis
Circa 3rd Century B.C.
The domed lid with a central Dionysos head modelled in relief, the curling hair dressed with a diadem with foliate pendants, wearing pendant earrings, the full lips painted in pink slip, the eyes outlined in black, circumscribed by a band of repeat wave pattern and a band of ovolo decoration embellished in pink, pale blue and red, the front of the cylindrical vessel painted in pink, red and pale blue with three revelling Bacchic Erotes; one holding a thyrsus, another playing pipes flanking a central dancing figure, the reverse decorated with a band of three rosettes linked by stylised linear foliage, with a band of wave pattern below, the tripod legs comprising two doves and a rectangular slab foot ornamented with a palmette, 8½in (22cm) high, 7¼in (18.5cm) diam, both of the bird-shaped feet repaired
