A Louis XVI vari-colour gold and green enamel snuff box,
by Louis Roucel, with the charge and discharge marks of Julien Alaterre, Paris 1774, and signed to the rim "Roucel orfe du Roy À Paris,"
rectangular with canted corners, the cover sides and base each with an enamel plaque finely painted miniatures after Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French, 1725–1805), the cover depicting cupid ready to fire an arrow, his modesty protected by a pink rose bush, the base after "The Broken Jug" (1785) and the sides panels with typical Greuze women, one doing the ironing, all within stiff leaf and reeded frame on a ground of translucent green enamel over wavy engine-turning within a two colour gold egg and twisted laurel leaf border (losses), in the original red leather case, height 2.8cm, length 7.7cm.
