When the cat's away signed 'H Knight' (lower left), inscribed with title and artist's name and address on a label attached to the reverse oil on canvas 78 x 61.5cm (30 11/16 x 24 3/16in).
Provenance: A gift from the artist to the great-grandfather of the present owner.
Exhibited: Royal Academy, 1896, no. 626.
The present lot - a gift from Harold Knight to a fellow student of the Nottingham School of Art (believed to be called Riley)- was painted while the artist still lived in his native city, and was Harold Knight's first ever Royal Academy exhibit.
