Footnotes
Greatly influenced by William Powell Frith, Hicks' most noted works are detailed portrayals of Victorian life. Turning his back on three years of medical training at University College, London, Hicks entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1844 and was a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1848 where works such as Dividend Day, Bank of England (1859) were exhibited. Upon the decline of the popularity of genre painting in the 1860s, Hicks focused on historical scenes and then society portraiture by the 1870s.
