Footnotes

  • The present work is after the Virgin and Child by Sir Anthony Van Dyck, now in the possession of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. As the label to the reverse of the frame suggests, Bernard Lens was miniaturist to both George I and George II and was one of the most important painters of his day. He was patronised by many of the most prominent people in the country and taught drawing to several of the royal children, as well as the young Horace Walpole. It was Lens who introduced into England the practice of painting miniatures on ivory, instead of vellum, and he was one of the last miniaturists to make copies of classical, religious and mythological subjects; some, like the present work, being on a relatively large scale.
