Gandria is a small picturesque fishing village situated on Lake Lugano near the Italian border of Switzerland. Feiler first visited the area in 1954 and the view of the lake through a veil of trees became the subject of several works in the 1950s. This view was the stimulus for abstraction for Feiler and the result is a very striking and compact composition. The lake itself, a strong horizontal, is almost obscured by the trees packed vertically in front of it. As most of his output, the source of inspiration for Feiler is nature itself. While the title of the painting gives an insight to the source of inspiration for the artist, topographical detail or accuracy in Feiler's painting is disregarded in favour of overall form. It seems that nature is the springboard for the artist to create highly evocative and elemental compositions such as Gandria, Black and Lemon.

A painting from the same series by Feiler, which was also executed in 1956 and titled Gandria, Grey and Black was sold in these rooms on 8 November 2007 for £28,800.
