From 1921-4, Ben and Winifred Nicholson spent their winters and springs in the Villa Capriccio, Castagnola. The year 1922, around when the present work was painted, proved a particularly fruitful and inspirational spell for both of them. 'Winifred remembered how in the winter "our painting came to flowering point. It had hatched..."' and 'She also continued with her Byam Shaw training of working out of doors and painted views of the furrowed Swiss hills under snow and of flowering trees and bushes in spring time [cat.no.3]' (Judith Collins, Winifred Nicholson, Tate, London, 1987, p.16).
