Footnotes

  • Provenance:
The Nugget Shop Inc., Juneau, Alaska; Western author Zane Grey; by descent through the family.

    Note:
An accompanying tag from the Nugget Shop Inc. reads: "This Whale Killer blanket is one of the very rare patterns. Only the most powerful chiefs dared used (sic) the Emblem as it was a constant challenge to battle and a defeat meant the loss of the right to its use and the transfer to the victor and a disgrace worse than death to its loser. He wore it draped over his shoulders and usually backed into the room to display it. He wore it in receiving distinguished visitors - festivities, funerals, etc -".

    Cf:
Holm, Bill, THE BOX OF DAYLIGHT, University of Washington Press, Seattle & London, p. 57, ill. 81. "Most Chilkat blankets are designed as highly abstract representations of crest animals, so patterned and conventionalized in the formline design system, that they are not recognizable to those lacking special knowledge. This one is an exception; it is one of a number of blankets made near the end of the nineteenth century in which the represented animal is shown configuratively on a white background...Chilkat blankets from this time, especially if they are configurative in design like this one, often have floating elements unlike the continuous formline patterns of more standard blankets."
