Campo del Cielo Select Fist-Sized Meteorite
Iron, coarse octahedrite
Gran Chaco, Argentina
Iron meteorites originate from the molten iron core of what was briefly a planet between Mars and Jupiter. This planet broke apart during formation approximately 4.5 billions years ago during the birth of the solar system, and its remnants comprise the asteroid belt. This handsome, fist-sized meteorite originates from this eventthe same celestial event responsible for 99.9% of all meteorites. Covered with minute sockets and tiny crenulations, this meteorite is unusually asteroid-like in appearanceironically the result of weathering on the Earths surface for 4000-plus years. Surprisingly dense for its size with a charcoal to platinum patina, this is a enchanting example from The Valley of the Sky.
